Amherst Sewer Treatment Plant Reconstruction
The Town of Amherst engaged R&D Construction Management, LLC for construction management and energy consulting services on this $11 million project. This four-year project, which started in 2002 and has seven different prime contractors, was implemented to address the capital needs of the Town’s sewage treatment capabilities.
Partially driven by energy savings, the project entailed replacement of large, gas-driven pump motors with electrical engines with waste heat captured and used for domestic hot water and space heating through heat exchangers; new energy efficient lights throughout the plant, and direct drive motors replaced with variable speed drives on all pump motors.
All manual controls were placed on an Ethernet system, which ties into a single computer control room. Various treatment facilities were upgraded with new roofs, concrete and operating systems.
Also included in this project was paving and landscaping. Completion of this project is due in December 2006.
