Our Project Experience
Buffalo Science Charter School
This Building served as a monastery for Cloister nuns of the Dominican Order for 100 years. VASCO provided construction management for the interior demolition for this project which will change use from a monastery to a K- 8 Charter School
Niagara County Public Safety Training Facility $2.2 million
R&D Construction Management provided Construction Management Services for this 18,500 square foot facility that houses the Niagara County Emergency Services, Traffic Safety, and Code Enforcement Departments.
The building also features the County’s 911 Communications Center, classroom space for 100 students, and storage for all County emergency vehicles. This project included special requirements, such as a Project Labor Agreement and State-of-the-Art communications equipment for the 911 Communications Center.
Clemens Manor $4.5 Million
The former YMCA building in the heart of downtown in the city of Elmira, NY had been abandoned for ten years.
Three different developers unsuccessfully attempted to bring this landmark back to life. R&D CM, the fourth, successfully converted the 40,000 square foot building into a thirty unit, independent senior housing facility. R&D was involved in this project from its inception and assisted in accessing block grant funding for the final piece of project financing and historic tax credits, and in contractor selection.
Amherst Sewer Treatment Plant Reconstruction $11 million
The Town of Amherst engaged R&D Construction Management for construction management and energy consulting services on this project.
This four-year project, which started in 2002 and has seven different prime contractors, was implemented to address the capital needs of the Town’s sewage treatment capabilities.
Partially driven by energy savings, the project entailed replacement of large, gas-driven pump motors with electrical engines with waste heat captured and used for domestic hot water and space heating through heat exchangers; new energy efficient lights throughout the plant, and direct drive motors replaced with variable speed drives on all pump motors.
All manual controls were placed on an Ethernet system, which ties into a single computer control room.
Various treatment facilities were upgraded with new roofs, concrete and operating systems.
Also included in this project was paving and landscaping.
Norton Housing Development $7 Million
R & D Construction Management provided construction management and general construction services for this 250-unit municipal housing complex in North Tonawanda, NY.
Working as the General Contractor for Sheldrake, a New York City development firm, R&D hired employees and engaged sub-contractors for all of the work on this project. The work consisted of complete interior and exterior rehabilitation (including exterior landscaping and concrete replacement) of 250 housing units. The timing of the rehab was critical because in anticipation of the project, the owners left many apartments vacant through attrition, but there were still 60 tenants that had to be relocated into new units as the work continued.
Amherst Senior Services Center $6.9 Million
R&D Construction Management completed a 54,000 square foot Amherst Senior Services Center in the Town of Amherst, August 2000.
The original project budget was $8 million, with an estimated construction cost of $6.9 million. R&D streamlined the contract and value engineered the work to achieve a low contract bid of $6.3 million (a savings of $600,000 for the Town of Amherst). The savings allowed for purchase of additional amenities, including furniture and computer equipment.
This building houses a full-service kitchen (which provides food for the Meals-on-Wheels program), a dance hall, cafeteria, adult daycare center, meeting rooms, classrooms and staff offices. Completed August 2000.
Buffalo Bisons Stadium Rehabilitation $5.5 Million
R&D CMS directed the construction and construction management of improvements to Dunn Tire Park, home of the Triple “A” Buffalo Bisons Baseball Team.
This work was spread over three years, and in each case, the timeline was critical because the off-season was about five months, and all work had to be completed by Opening Day in April. The work included the following:
- Demolition, expansion and restoration of baseball offices, locker rooms, training facilities, weight rooms and batting cages.
- Painting of the entire exterior of the structure.
- Removal and caulking of all joints.
- Removal and installation of new lighting fixtures throughout the stadium.
- Installation of sanitary sewers and piping.
- Addition to the existing maintenance building.
- Demolition and installation of new entrance gates.
- Demolition of the existing right field bleachers.
- Installation of a new three-tiered “party deck,” and a large grassy viewing berm.
- The existing centerfield picnic area was constructed with new tent areas for private pre-game parties with new lighting, paving and landscaping.
- Installed the ‘Blue Zone’ on the first base side of Dunn Tire Park which afforded fans the opportunity to enjoy watching Buffalo Bisons baseball while relaxing at an outside bar and café.
- Performed extensive renovation to 38 interior Bison suites including: suite expansion, demolition, painting, carpeting, lighting and new ceilings.
Old Breckenridge Historic Church
This landmark facility, dating back to the City of Buffalo’s inception in the early 1800’s, was written up by City building inspectors for numerous code violations.
R&D Construction Management worked with City officials and provided construction and construction management for the work which corrected all code violations and reinstated much of the church’s former beauty. This work included a new roof, windows, doors and re-pointing of masonry.
Erie County Road Overlay and Culvert Reconstruction $6.8 Million
R&D Construction Management provided resident inspection on Erie County’s $4 million, 2003 Overlay Program, which saw the County pave nearly 100 miles of road.
The inspectors verified depth of asphalt and asphalt quantities, took temperatures and conducted compaction and skid tests. They also provided value engineering on road treatment and mix design.
R&D Construction Management also provided resident inspection for various culvert replacement projects in 2003. These projects consisted of demolition and reconstruction of nine culverts at a total cost of $2.8 million.
These projects demanded critical construction sequencing for two reasons:
- Road closures had to be minimized because these roads and culverts were either in highly trafficked areas or in rural areas with long detour routes; and the need for vehicles to access this area, in particular emergency vehicles, was critical.
- Most of the culvert work involved protected streams which demanded that the work be done in a timely fashion so as not to interrupt the spawning patterns of the aquatic life.
